VISITS OF HONOURABLE GUESTS

Louise Croot, then Vice-President of IFUW, visited us between February 3 and 6, 2007 and was the guest of honour at the opening event of our 50th Anniversary. (Louise was elected President of IFUW at the Manchester Triennial Conference in August 2007.)

The Right Honourable George Grubb, Lord Provost of Edinburgh and Mrs. Elizabeth Grubb, Lady Provost of the City of Edinburgh Council, whom I have had the honour of meeting at their reception for IFUW members in the City Chambers in Edinburgh before the Manchester Conference in August, visited Hong Kong briefly in mid-October 2007, prior to their official visit of Kyoto. Lady Provost Elizabeth was born in Hong Kong and was head girl in her final year at the King George V School. HKAUW gave the couple a warm welcome at her first home-coming since the Lady Provost’s departure from Hong Kong fifty years ago. Thanks to Betty Wei for the involvement of Prof. Felice Lieh Mak, Chairman of the British Foundation School Board, who gave a guided tour of the School herself to the Lord and Lady Provost. In the evening of the same day, i.e. October 15, a dinner hosted by President Julia Woo was organized in honour of the Lord and Lady Provost which was attended by HKAUW colleagues Wong Hing Chun, Betty Wei and Nancy Leung together with friends from The Chinese University of Hong Kong many of whom are alumni of the University of Edinburgh. Everybody enjoyed the dinner which was filled with friendship and stories of the old Hong Kong. Both the Lord and Lady Provost were impressed with their new-found friends in Hong Kong. Lady Provost sent her personal letter expressing her feelings by forwarding her written greetings and congratulations to the Association.
