Promoting International Solidarity and Partnerships

IFUW promotes international solidarity and partnerships among its federations and associations through the Bina Roy Partners in Development Programme (BRPID). Named after Dr Bina Roy of India, our first developing country international President, BRPID provides an opportunity for developing country affiliates to compete for funding for projects that they implement, which in turn helps them to strengthen their capacity to seek outside funding. IFUW members worldwide help make this possible. This issue announces the winners of the 2011 competition and introduces the new funding approach which we hope will ensure the programme's future sustainabilty.

Marianne Haslegrave,

IFUW President

2011 IFUW BRPID Projects

BRPID projects are intended to empower women and girls in developing countries through education and leadership development. The IFUW Board of Officers and Projects Committee are proud to announce the eight excellent projects selected to receive funding this year:

Kenya: Training in entrepreneurial skills and financial management for women and girls made vulnerable by HIV/AIDS (bottom photo)
Mexico: Workshops on gender equality and women's human rights
Moldova: Awareness campaign in high schools and universities on sexually transmitted diseases and family planning
Nigeria: Empowerment project for illiterate hairdressers in the Benue region (top photo)
Pakistan: Vocational training project for marginalised women in fruit preservation, processing and marketing
Thailand: Assertiveness training for university and professional women (middle photo)
Turkey: Awareness campaign on family violence, with particular emphasis on sensitization of pre-school and school-aged children
Uganda: Training for girls in slum areas in energy briquette production and management of the environment through sustainable use of organic waste

Each project will receive a grant ranging from CHF 1000 to CHF 2000 and will run between June 2011 and May 2012.

We would like to recognize the members of the IFUW Projects Committee for their hard work: Michelle Imison (Australia), Convener; Akanisi Kedrayate (Fiji); Bonnie Lincoln (USA); and Gomathy Venkateswar (India).

New BRPID Funding Approach

BRPID projects are funded by donations from IFUW members and supporters worldwide. This year we are introducing a new collection approach. Descriptions of the eight projects and the funding needed can be viewed at http://www.ifuw.org/brpid/2011/. NFAs, local associations and individuals who wish to contribute to this important work can support the project of their choice by clicking on the special button next to the project description and making a donation via credit card or bank transfer. When the total amount needed for a specific project has been reached, the website will show that it is fully funded. The BRPID Fund will advance money to enable the projects to start immediately and will cover the shortfall for any projects that do not receive sufficient donations.

No administrative fee is charged; the full amount of the donations will go to the projects. General donations will still be very welcome and will be used to help increase the number and/or size of the grants that can be guaranteed for 2012.

There has been a noticeable improvement in the quality of the BRPID project proposals since the introduction of the new competitive selection process in 2009. (Prior to that time all proposed projects were funded). The IFUW Projects Committee is closely monitoring the projects and offering assistance with establishing evaluation frameworks. Part of the goal is to help strengthen NFA project capacity and increase their ability to obtain outside funding.

We encourage you to visit the BRPID section of the website to learn more about the 2011 winners. IFUW members travelling are also encouraged to visit the projects and see first-hand the important work the BRPID programme is supporting. We will be encouraging those running the projects to send short updates and photos during the year so that donors can feel more a part of what is happening.

Applications for the next BRPID competition will be available from 1 December 2011 and the application deadline will be 28 February 2012.

[IFUW Networks] Situation in Japan

Dear IFUW Members,

We know that members throughout IFUW are concerned by the tragic events that have been taking place in Japan over the last few days as a result of the terrible earthquake and tsunami . A message from the IFUW Board was sent immediately to the Japanese Association (JAUW) leaders to express solidarity and to let our JAUW sisters know that IFUW members are with them in thought.

Both Reiko Aoki, JAUW President, and Nobuko Akita, JAUW CIR, have since been in contact. They confirmed that members in Tokyo and the surrounding areas are safe, but they do not yet have news of their members in Sendai, the area hardest hit by the tsunami. With the power outages, telephone and email communication with areas in the north of the country are almost impossible. They expect it may be days or even weeks before they know the full impact of the disaster.

As Nobuko Akita wrote "as we wait praying for the safety of our members, it is encouraging to know that your prayers are with us". There is little more we can do at this point. Once the situation is clearer and the Japanese Association has had time to assess what assistance is needed, the IFUW Board will be looking at how we can help and support them.

Until then, we do not wish to inundate them with emails to answer when they are facing so many pressing problems within the country. We shall pass on any news when they send it so you can remain informed.

Kind regards,
Leigh Bradford Ratteree, IFUW Secretary General

Human Rights Day  (IFUW update)

Human Rights Day is observed each year on December 10. This year’s theme

Speak Up, Stop Discrimination”, recognizes human rights defenders who work to end all forms of discrimination.

In 1993, 45 years after the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the UN World Conference on Human Rights in Vienna confirmed that women’s rights were human rights. It served for identifying neglect of women’s rights as a human rights violation and in drawing attention to the relationship between gender and human rights violations.

IFUW members throughout the world are working hard to help women achieve their full human rights. According to Conchita Poncini, IFUW UN Representative, “women’s rights mean not just gender justices, but gender equality which leads to women’s empowerment… We are all human rights defenders! It is important that we keep on working until every country has effective national human rights institutions”.
