HONG KONG ASSOCIATION OF
UNIVERSITY WOMEN
Annual Business Meeting 2008
(21 March 2009)
President’s Report
2008 marked the beginning of the second fifty year for the
Hong Kong Association of
University Women after the celebration of our 50th anniversary
last year. It has very much been a year of re-organization
and planning for HKAUW. My report for the year is as follows:
1) I wish to thank the below-listed EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE for
its support and co- operation during the year:
Julia Woo President
Vickie Ho Honorary Secretary ( Internal)
Stacy Gould Honorary Secretary ( External)
Goretty Siu Honorary Treasurer
Simone Ho Scholarship Convenor
Chen Li Juan
Annie Li
Irene Lok
Caroline Law
Janet Liu
2) I would also like to express my special thanks to my below-named
colleagues who rendered me advice and help as and when needed.
Wong Hing Chun Chair, International Relations
Betty Wei Senior Advisor
Lucille Evans, Senior Advisor
3) A Core Group with members from amongst HKAUW 50th Anniversary
Scholarship Recipients was convened by the President in January
to brain-storm ideas for the development of services from
HKAUW to the community. The Core Group met again in March
and July. A number of project ideas were discussed but ultimately
it was resolved as the first community service from HKAUW
the publication of a mini-encyclopedia on Hong Kong for use
by university students from the Mainland. A 5-member Working
Group was formed and has drafted a proposal which was approved
in principle by the EXCO.
More detailed investigations would be required before further
deliberations.
4) A total of 17 scholarships, 9 for undergraduates and 8
for postgraduates, at a total of HK$ 205,000, were awarded
in 2008. Thanks to the interview panel consisting of Simone
Ho (Scholarship Convenor), Betty Wei, Andrea Hope (from Shui
Yan University), Nancy Leung ( interview of medical and science
students) and Julia Woo.
Our deepest appreciation goes to the generous support to
our annual scholarship scheme from our donors, especially
Dr. Thomas Cheung. Special thanks is recorded to Betty Wei
for her effort in acquiring the two scholarships donated by
the Ohel Leah Synagogue Charity .
5) A new and interactive HKAUW Website was launched after
more than six months’ work by Caroline Law and Irene Lok who
have spent hundreds of hours meeting and communicating with
the web-designer before the objective was achieved.
6) The HKAUW Membership Database which can be easily updated
on line has been established. Special thanks to Caroline Law
who would also continue with the responsibility for membership
updating.
7) HKAUW has been in close linkage with IFUW via the internet
during the year.
Establishment of closer connection with our Asian IFUW-members
would be expected during the UAW Conference to take place
in May 2009 in Singapore.
As I was elected President in 2005, I have come to the final
stage of my appointment.
Although I may feel a little short-handed at times, it has
been a good four years of learning and working together as
a team. In closing, I would like to wish the EXCO 2009
all the best in carrying-on with our founders’ vision and
in achieving new milestones with the support of our members.
Julia Woo
President
